2002 Ferrari 575M Maranello: Performance, Value, and the Legacy of the V12 Grand Tourer

The Ferrari 550 Maranello, introduced in 1996, marked a significant departure from the mid-engine sports cars that had dominated the brand’s lineup for decades. This two-seat grand tourer revived the classic front-engine, rear wheel drive layout, a configuration last seen in the iconic 365 GTB/4 Daytona. Its success spawned the 575M Maranello, a refined and more powerful evolution of the original.

While often considered similar, the 550 and 575M exhibit distinct differences. The latter boasts a larger and more potent V12 engine, a redesigned interior, improved braking and handling, and a host of other mechanical enhancements. These upgrades, reflected in the “M” for Modificata (modified), justify its slightly higher price tag when it was first released.

Today, used 575Ms offer a compelling value proposition. Despite their high original sticker price, they can be acquired at a fraction of their initial cost, especially if they’re not in pristine condition.

One such example, a low mileage Argento Nürburgring model, recently failed to sell at auction due to a combination of its less than perfect condition and the bidder’s desire for a bargain. While the car’s appeal remains strong, minor cosmetic issues like a paint chip can detract from its value.

Equipped with features like xenon headlights, fog lights, a hood scoop, quad exhaust tips, 18-inch alloy wheels, a luxurious leather interior, and modern amenities, the 575M offers a blend of performance and comfort that continues to fascinate driving enthusiasts.

Beneath the sleek exterior of this 575M lies a potent 5.7-liter V12 engine, capable of producing a formidable 508 horsepower and 434 lb-ft of torque. This power is transmitted to the rear wheels through a precise six speed F1 sequential gearbox and a limited slip differential.

Notably, this model offers 40 horsepower more than its predecessor, the 550 Maranello. Although the odometer was reset in 2017, previous records suggest that this car has traveled approximately 11,000 miles since new. This relatively low mileage indicates that the 575M has seen limited use, making it a desirable option for enthusiasts seeking a well preserved example of this iconic Ferrari.
