The early 1970s marked a turning point for the GTO, as the market shifted towards smaller, more fuel efficient cars. This trend, coupled with rising insurance premiums for high performance vehicles, significantly impacted sales of the iconic muscle car. Despite these challenges, Pontiac managed to sell approximately 40,000 GTOs in 1970, with the hardtop body style accounting for the majority of sales at 32,731 units.

The convertible was considerably rarer, with only 3,621 units produced. The Judge package, which added $337 to the base price of $3,267, remained popular, with 3,635 hardtops and 162 convertibles leaving the factory. One such Judge, a particularly well preserved example with original documentation, recently appeared on Craigslist.

This vehicle, a testament to the enduring appeal of the GTO, showcases the distinctive features of the Judge package, including its aggressive styling, powerful engine, and unique handling characteristics.

The Judge’s striking appearance, featuring a blacked out grille, hood scoops, and rear spoiler, made it instantly recognizable on the road. Under the hood, the Judge was equipped with a Ram Air III engine, delivering impressive power and performance. The car’s suspension system was also tuned for enhanced handling, making it a capable performer on both the street and the track.

The GTO, and the Judge in particular, remains a highly sought-after collectible today. Its iconic status and relatively limited production numbers have contributed to its enduring popularity among muscle car enthusiasts. The example that recently appeared on Craigslist is a prime example of a well-preserved Judge, showcasing the timeless appeal of this legendary vehicle.

While the owner remains tight-lipped about any potential restoration, the immaculate condition of this GTO Judge strongly suggests it has undergone significant work. A closer look under the hood reveals the car’s departure from its original configuration.

The stock 400ci engine and 4-speed automatic transmission have been replaced with a different 400ci unit and a new 4-speed gearbox, though the original transmission and shifter remain. Despite the engine swap, the car runs smoothly and performs as expected.

Priced at $65,000, this GTO Judge offers a compelling value for its pristine condition. Given its rarity and desirability, it’s likely to attract significant interest. Potential buyers should conduct a thorough inspection or enlist the services of a third-party expert before making an offer.

Located in Valley Center, California, this classic muscle car is ready to hit the road and turn heads. One of the most striking features of this GTO Judge is its flawless exterior. The paint is deep, rich, and free of blemishes, while the chrome accents gleam in the sunlight. The interior is equally impressive, with plush seats, original gauges, and a vintage feel that evokes the era in which it was built.

Despite the engine swap, this GTO Judge remains a powerful and exhilarating driving experience. The 400ci engine delivers ample torque, propelling the car forward with authority. The 4-speed transmission shifts smoothly, allowing the driver to control the car’s power delivery.

If you’re looking for a classic muscle car that combines timeless style with modern performance, this GTO Judge is an excellent choice. Its pristine condition, powerful engine, and iconic design make it a standout example of its kind.
