BMW Restructures Design Teams After Backlash Over XM and 7 Series Styling

It appears that the recent backlash against BMW’s bold design choices has finally reached the top brass. The Bavarian automaker is undergoing a significant restructuring of its design teams, effective October 1st.

While Adrian van Hooydonk remains the chief designer, Domagoj Dukec, who has been at the helm of BMW’s design since 2019, is being reassigned to Rolls-Royce. To address the concerns surrounding the controversial designs of models like the XM and the 7 Series, BMW has divided its design responsibilities between two teams.

Oliver Heilmer, previously the chief designer at MINI, will now oversee the design of small to mid-size cars and M GmbH models. Maximilian Missoni, joining from Polestar, will take charge of upper mid-size and luxury vehicles, including the newly acquired Alpina brand.

This shake-up offers hope for those who have been disappointed by BMW’s recent design direction. However, to ensure that the new design teams meet expectations, the digital world continues to offer its interpretations. Giorgi Tedoradze, a Georgia-based industrial designer, has presented a compelling concept for M GmbH: a classic-looking M9 model.

This vision, which stands in stark contrast to the XM and the rumored ‘Neue Klasse’ coupe, suggests a potential path forward for the high-performance brand. The Pixel Master has crafted a vision of BMW’s future, reimagining iconic models like the 7 Series, 5 Series, and X7 in a radically different aesthetic.

While this unofficial design project remains hypothetical, it sparks a thought: could BMW benefit from a high end model that could compete with both performance oriented vehicles like the Nissan GT-R and luxury focused marques like Aston Martin or McLaren? Instead of the quirky and boxy direction they’ve taken with recent models, a flagship grand tourer could redefine BMW’s luxury ethos, offering a comfortable and fast driving experience.

Such a vehicle would cater to the desires of discerning drivers seeking a blend of performance and luxury and align with the evolving automotive world. As luxury car manufacturers increasingly focus on electric and hybrid powertrains, BMW could position itself as a leader in this segment by offering a grand tourer that combines cutting edge technology with timeless design.

Imagine a car that seamlessly blends the practicality of a luxury sedan with the exhilarating performance of a sports car. A vehicle that can effortlessly cruise through city streets and conquer winding mountain roads, all while providing a refined and comfortable interior. The Pixel Master’s vision hints at the potential for such a car, and it’s a tempting prospect for BMW enthusiasts.
