The automotive world has been eagerly anticipating the arrival of the fifth-generation Subaru WRX STI, a model renowned for its high performance and rally heritage. Unfortunately, Subaru has yet to announce plans for this much-anticipated vehicle, leaving fans in suspense. As a substitute for the STI, Subaru has introduced the 2025 WRX tS, a new variant that incorporates elements from the existing WRX GT and TR models. This model aims to deliver a balance of performance and everyday usability, while still appealing to enthusiasts looking for a more spirited driving experience.
The 2025 WRX tS stands out with its distinctive “tuned by STI” badge, marking the first time this designation has been applied to the WRX lineup. The tS features upgraded Brembo brakes from the WRX TR, boasting six-piston calipers in the front and two-piston calipers in the rear, painted in gold. It also shares the same 19-inch Bridgestone Potenza S007 summer tires as the TR, mounted on unique wheels designed for the tS. These enhancements underscore Subaru’s commitment to performance, even in the absence of a new STI model.
The tS incorporates a suite of advanced driving features drawn from the WRX GT, including five drive profiles: Comfort, Normal, Sport, Sport+, and Individual. It also offers three steering modes and powertrain adjustments that enhance the vehicle’s responsiveness.
A key highlight is the adaptive dampers, which have been specifically calibrated for U.S. roads, providing improved ride quality and handling compared to the standard TR model. Unlike the GT, which is only available with a continuously variable automatic transmission, the tS retains a six-speed manual transmission, catering to driving purists.
Inside the tS, Subaru has made several enhancements to create a sporty and tech-savvy environment. The cabin features a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and distinctive blue accents, along with Recaro seats for added support during spirited driving. Notably, there is no sunroof option to maximize headroom for helmets, highlighting the model’s performance focus. Exterior features that set the tS apart include unique wheels, black mirror caps, and a trunklid lip spoiler, along with pink badges that add a touch of flair.
On the racetrack, the tS demonstrates its capabilities around California’s Sonoma Raceway. The turbocharged 2.4-liter flat-four engine delivers 271 horsepower, but there are indications that additional power would enhance the driving experience further, particularly when compared to competitors like the Honda Civic Type R and Volkswagen Golf R. Despite this, the tS handles well, with minimal body roll and a responsive brake system that inspires confidence during aggressive driving. The standout performance feature remains the Brembo brakes, which provide exceptional pedal feel and durability under demanding conditions.
In everyday driving scenarios, the tS adapts well to various road conditions, with the Comfort damper setting effectively smoothing out rough pavement. The vehicle’s steering and gearing require engagement from the driver, providing a tactile experience that many enthusiasts appreciate. The new digital gauge cluster offers versatile displays for different driving contexts, enhancing usability. While pricing details for the tS have not yet been disclosed, its position in the WRX lineup suggests it could fall between the existing TR and GT models, fueling hopes that Subaru will eventually deliver a full-fledged STI model in the future.
