Hyundai Motor America has issued a recall for 1,545 of its Nexo hydrogen fuel-cell SUVs. The recall affects models produced between 2019 and 2024. The issue lies in a thermally-activated pressure relief device (TPRD) that may fail, potentially releasing hydrogen gas.

The South Korean automaker has traced the problem to microcracks in the glass component of the TPRD. To address the issue, Hyundai will replace the faulty glass TPRD with a metal one.

Owners of affected vehicles are advised to park their SUVs outside and away from other vehicles or structures until the recall is addressed. Hyundai will begin sending notification letters to owners in December. The recall is being conducted at no cost to the owners.

Hyundai Motor Company has issued a recall for its Nexo sport utility vehicles due to concerns about hydrogen gas leaks. The recall was prompted by reports of multiple incidents in South Korea where hydrogen gas was discharged from the vehicles.

Engineers determined that microcracks developed in the glass bulb during the inspection process, leading to the leaks. The recall affects Nexo models produced at Hyundai’s Ulsan assembly plant.

In the United States, the Nexo is available exclusively in California and starts at $60,135. The hydrogen fuel cell segment remains relatively small, with low sales for the Nexo and its competitors, including the Toyota Mirai and Honda CR-V e: FCEV.
