Finding affordable yet thrilling sports cars isn’t as simple as it once was. However, some great options still offer genuine driver enjoyment without breaking the bank, as the best budget-friendly sports cars prove.

While there may be fewer of these models today, and they might not seem as affordable due to inflation, they are still out there, waiting to be appreciated by those who value both excitement and accessibility.

Autocar presents its top 10 affordable sports cars—vehicles that, despite their price, stand among the best sports cars you can own.

This selection includes mid-engined two-seaters, front-engined roadsters, big-engined muscle cars, and lightweight, performance-oriented specials.

Their one shared trait is their attainable price point, generally at or below £50,000, sometimes even well below, and each can bring joy to any drive.

Some of these vehicles can serve as practical daily drivers, though others may appeal only to the true enthusiast.

Each delivers substantial fun for a modest investment, and each deserves consideration from anyone who cherishes an open road and a moment to enjoy it.

    1. Alpine A110

The Alpine A110 is pure driving fun, from the grumbling power of its turbocharged engine to the poised agility of its handling.

It revitalizes roads that other cars might not and boasts an aluminum body, mid-mounted engine, and double-wishbone suspension—traits usually found in high-end supercars.

    Alpine A110

When it debuted in 2017, critics and owners were enamored, and the follow-up A110 S offered an increase in power from 248bhp to 288bhp (later rising to 296bhp), along with upgraded suspension and brakes.

Special editions like the Légende GT have come and gone, but the original A110 remains beloved for its balance, control, and driver involvement.

In its commitment to driver experience, it’s reminiscent of the Toyota GT86 from 2012 but with even more agility and fun, earning its place among affordable sports icons.

    2. Porsche 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman

Even with the downsized four-cylinder turbo engine, the Porsche 718 stands as a benchmark for mid-engined sports cars.

Although critics initially disapproved of the engine’s tone and responsiveness, Porsche responded by reintroducing a naturally aspirated flat-six for the high-end GTS, GT4, and Boxster Spyder models in 2019.

The turbo flat-fours lacked the engaging sound and smoothness expected of Porsche, but with the return of the flat-six, the 718 series reaffirmed itself as a top contender in sports car excellence.

Available in manual or PDK options, and despite some critiques of the manual’s gearing, the 718 remains highly engaging to drive at all levels of the model range.

The 718’s dynamic prowess is hard to beat, setting it apart as a once-in-a-generation car.

    3. Ariel Atom 4

For those with a £50,000 budget looking purely for fun, the Ariel Atom 4 is an unmissable choice.

A unique blend of car and motorcycle, this lightweight, tubular-framed two-seater is all about the essentials—so much so that a windshield is an optional extra.

Powered by a turbocharged Honda four-cylinder engine that can reach up to 350bhp in a car weighing just over 600kg, the Atom offers explosive acceleration and exhilarating driving.

Its chassis is adjustable, allowing it to adapt to bumpy roads just as well as it does to the track. Mastering the Atom on a track is a challenge that few sports cars offer, and cruising home afterward is an unmatched experience in liveliness.

    4. Toyota GR86

The Toyota GR86 is the evolved version of the GT86, with added power, improved looks, and an interior refresh.

Built on a reinforced chassis and powered by a larger, 2.5-liter flat-four engine with 232bhp, it retains the beloved balance and handling that made the GT86 a hit.

The GR86 features better grip with its new Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires, while its styling updates enhance its appeal. Despite some firming of the ride, it remains a brilliant rear-wheel-drive car with a characterful driving feel.

Unfortunately, due to new safety regulations, it’s available only until early 2024, making it an appealing yet fleeting gem in the affordable sports car market.

    5. Mazda MX-5

The fourth-generation Mazda MX-5 improves upon its predecessor in nearly every way. Shorter, lighter, and more spacious, it’s faster, more economical, and engaging to drive.

Mazda’s 2018 facelift introduced a 23bhp boost to its 2.0-liter engine, as well as reach-adjustable steering.

Since then, minor tweaks have kept it fresh, with the 2023 model featuring updated trim names and color options.

The MX-5’s rear-wheel-drive agility and lively character make it the most fun-per-pound option on the list, a car that maintains its timeless charm and proves unbeatable in the joy it brings per dollar.

    6. Morgan Super 3

Morgan’s Super 3 builds on the success of the previous 3 Wheeler with a more modern, versatile design.

Retaining its unique three-wheel layout, it now features a three-cylinder Ford Fiesta engine and improved suspension. Weighing just 635kg, it’s nimble and rewarding to drive, especially on winding roads.

While the lack of weather protection may deter some, the Super 3’s charm and accessibility on everyday roads make it a delight, even if it stretches the idea of affordability at over £40,000.

    7. Ford Mustang

The Ford Mustang is a standout for its V8 power and undeniable charisma. The seventh generation Mustang, priced under £50,000, is the best version yet, though its size can make going through narrow UK roads challenging.

The 5.0-liter V8 brings incredible power, though at the cost of frequent fuel stops.

Despite lacking the refinement of some European rivals, the Mustang’s rear-drive balance and unmistakable charm make it an enduring favorite among enthusiasts.

    8. Caterham Seven

The Caterham Seven remains a benchmark for pure driving excitement.

Available in various forms, including the affordable Seven 170 with a turbocharged 660cc engine, it delivers thrilling performance thanks to its ultra-lightweight build.

Higher-end models add more power and track-focused equipment, with even the top-tier Caterham 620R priced below the Porsche Cayman GT4.

Though not designed for comfort or safety, the Seven offers an unmatched driving experience that’s simply fun.

    9. BMW Z4

BMW’s Z4 offers versatility with both convertible styling and a range of powertrains, from 194bhp up to a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six with 335bhp.

Recently available with a six-speed manual, the Z4 also benefits from enhanced handling and stability.

Though it leans more toward a comfortable cruiser, it has the performance to challenge other sports cars and makes a stylish choice that balances speed and relaxation.

    10. Morgan Plus Four

Though priced higher than others on this list, the Morgan Plus Four offers affordability through favorable financing.

With its retro styling and BMW-sourced turbocharged four-cylinder engine, it’s an appealing blend of vintage charm and modern engineering.

Designed for relaxed drives, it’s narrow, nimble, and ideal for scenic roads. Its open-air design and limited refinement suit it best for leisurely outings, not high-speed pursuits, and it holds value exceptionally well.

These sports cars, each with its distinct character and strengths, demonstrate that automotive thrills are still accessible without exceeding a reasonable budget.

For those who crave the pure joy of the open road, these models deliver lasting satisfaction.
