The FIA announced that Formula 1 Race Director Niels Wittich has stepped down from his role, effective immediately. Wittich, who began serving as race director in 2022 following the removal of his predecessor Michael Masi, is leaving to “pursue new opportunities,” according to an official statement. His duties will be taken over by Rui Marques, who will assume the position starting at the Las Vegas Grand Prix on November 24. The FIA expressed gratitude for Wittich’s contributions, recognizing his professionalism and dedication throughout his tenure.

As the race director, Wittich managed the technical and sporting aspects of Formula 1 races, with specific situations being handled by a rotating group of race stewards. His time in the role has been marked by challenges, particularly around the enforcement of rules and penalties, which has been a consistent source of friction within the sport. These issues predate Wittich’s tenure, highlighting a longstanding struggle for the FIA to maintain consistent officiating standards in the face of evolving racing dynamics.

Recently, tensions around FIA rulings have intensified. Several drivers voiced frustrations over inconsistencies in penalties, pointing to a perceived lack of clarity in decision-making by race officials. The controversy came to a head with the FIA’s decision to assign a community service penalty to Max Verstappen after he used explicit language during a news conference, sparking debate on the proportionality and consistency of FIA disciplinary actions.

These issues have led drivers to speak out about how the FIA interacts with them, with some even addressing FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem directly. Last week, the drivers collectively penned a letter urging the FIA to treat them with greater respect, expressing frustration at the way the sport’s leaders address them and the broader community. This development underscores the growing call within F1 for clearer and more respectful communication and a consistent approach to rules and discipline.
