NEW YORK, December 19, 2024–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Clean Maine Carbon (CMC) has issued its first biochar CO2 Removal Certificates (CORCs) on the Puro.earth registry with Flowcarbon as its carbon development partner. This accomplishment underscores CMC’s leadership in sustainable carbon removal and highlights biochar’s transformative role in combating climate change and enhancing agricultural practices.

Based in Greenville, Maine, CMC transforms locally sourced, low-value woody biomass into premium biochar. This process both repurposes waste materials and sequesters carbon, contributing to climate change mitigation. Biochar serves as an eco-friendly soil amendment, improving soil health, enhancing water retention and reducing the need for chemical fertilizers.

CMC’s issuance of CORCs places it among the select biochar projects in the United States approved to issue CORCs on the Puro.earth registry. This distinction reflects the project’s commitment to the rigorous verification process throughout which Flowcarbon has been its partner, and its ongoing adherence to the highest environmental standards.

According to Flowcarbon Co-Founder Caroline Klatt, “It’s rewarding to see the projects we work with meet major milestones. In addition to CMC’s sustainable agricultural products, these carbon credit issuances are important for scaling decarbonization through innovative technologies.”

Biochar has vast potential to sequester significant amounts of CO₂ annually. CMC plans to expand its production capabilities to meet increasing demand from sectors such as agriculture, water filtration, and mine reclamation.

“This milestone affirms our mission to lead in the biochar industry while providing rural communities with sustainable economic opportunities. We’re thrilled to partner with Flowcarbon to showcase how innovative solutions can address critical environmental challenges,” said Patrick Jones, President of Clean Maine Carbon.

In partnership with stakeholders including local agricultural innovators and organizations, CMC is exploring the potential of biochar for widespread applications, from improving soil health to aiding in the mitigation of PFAS contamination.
