Kenyan climate-tech firm Tera has made history as the first independently validated African project developer listed on the Riverse carbon credit registry, Africa.com has reported.
This milestone follows third-party validation by an accredited body, confirming the environmental integrity of Tera’s carbon removal operations and enabling it to issue high-quality carbon credits.
Tera transforms sugarcane bagasse, a byproduct of sugar production, into biochar—a carbon-rich substance that enhances soil health, boosts agricultural yields, and locks away carbon for over a millennium.
By combining nature-based solutions with a proprietary digital Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (dMRV) system, Tera ensures data accuracy and transparency, storing carbon metrics on an immutable digital ledger.

“We’re proud to be the first independently validated African developer listed on Riverse,” Tera’s CEO, Rob Palmer, was quoted as saying by Africa.com.
This marks a turning point for African climate solutions, as it builds trust in the region’s carbon markets and supports Tera’s mission to generate sustainable jobs and restore degraded land, the chief executive added.
Tera’s facility in Kisumu, Kenya, is strategically located in the sugarcane belt, ensuring steady feedstock supply.
With this validation secured, the company is scaling operations across Africa to empower smallholder farmers and combat land degradation.
Tera’s 2030 goals include producing 450,000 tons of biochar, permanently sequestering 1 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e), restoring 2.2 million acres (900,000 hectares) of farmland, and creating thousands of green jobs, especially for rural women and youth.
According to Clément Georget, co-founder of Paris-based Riverse, Tera is a model of climate innovation, and their dMRV and community-centered approach set a new benchmark for carbon markets.
